Volodymyr Kulyk is Head Research Fellow at the Department of Political Culture and Ideology, Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies, National Academy of Science of Ukraine. He is also Professor at the Ukrainian Free University and Associate at the Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard University.

Born on 7 March 1963 in Chereshenky, Chernihiv oblast, Ukraine, he graduated from the Physics Department, Kyiv Shevchenko National University, in 1987., He was awarded a C.Sc. degree in Political Science in 1999 and a D.Sc. degree in 2010.

Dr. Kulyk has taught at Columbia, Stanford and Yale Universities, University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukrainian Catholic University, Ukrainian Free University, and University of Iceland.

He has had research fellowships at Harvard and Stanford Universities, University of Alberta, University College London, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Washington, DC), German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Berlin), and Institute for Human Sciences (Vienna).

In 2010-2015, Dr. Kulyk was a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language. He is a member of the editorial boards of Krytyka [Critique], Politychni doslidzhennia [Political Studies], and Visnyk Natsional’noho Tekhnichnoho Universytetu “Kyīvs’kyi politechnichnyi instytut”. Dr. Kulyk has served as a reviewer of grant applications for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (European Union), Fulbright Program (USA), State Education Development Agency (Latvia), and Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies (Sweden). He has also reviewed submissions for two dozen Western peer-reviewed academic journals.

He is a member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance in respect of Ukraine (since 2013).

Dr. Kulyk is author of 4 books, more than 40 journal articles, and more than 20 chapters in collected volumes, including 30 publications in English and 10 in German, Polish, Russian and French.

His research topics include language politics, ethnopolitics, politics of memory, ethnonational identity, nationalism, political and media discourse in contemporary Ukraine, and language policy in multilingual countries.
