INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL “THE HISTORY OF THE HOLOCAUST IN UKRAINE: RESEARCH, EDUCATION, MEMORY”

August 12-15, 2026 at the Kuras Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine hosted an the educational seminar-school “Holocaust History in Ukraine: Study, Teaching, Memory”, organized by the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies in partnership with Yad Vashem: World Holocaust Center, Jerusalem with the support of our Institute.

The seminar-school was held with the financial support of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany within the framework of the program “Expanding Cooperation with Civil Society in the Eastern Partnership Countries 2026”, the Association of European Organizations and Communities of Ukraine Vaad Ukraine, Jüdische Gemeinde Düsseldorf, Heritage Heroes / Learning to Remember


Opening of the seminar. Galyna Zelenko, Anatolii Podolskyi

At the open seminar-school, the director of the Institute, Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, Galyna Zelenko, delivered a welcoming speech to the participants. This scientific and educational event was also welcomed by Yosef Zisels, co-president of Vaad Ukraine, and Noa Segal, representative of the International School for Holocaust Studies of the Yad Vashem Memorial.

A lecture on the topic “The Relevance of the Study of the History of the Holocaust: Challenges During the Russian War Against Ukraine” was delivered at the seminar-school by Anatolii Podolskyi, a leading researcher in the Department of Ethnopolitical Science of our Institute, candidate of historical sciences. A. Podolsky was also the head and coordinator of this event.


Speaker: Yosyf Zisels

During the seminar-school, teachers of history and other social sciences from all over Ukraine work in the formats of lectures, discussions, trainings, excursions and professional discussions. The event’s program covered a wide range of topics: the history of the Holocaust in Ukraine and Europe, the politics of totalitarian regimes, Ukrainian-Jewish relations, the ideology of Nazi anti-Semitism, interdisciplinary approaches to studying the Holocaust, other genocides of the 20th century, issues of historical memory, as well as the impact of Russia’s modern war against Ukraine on research, teaching, and understanding of Holocaust memory.

Particular attention was paid to modern methods of teaching Holocaust history in schools and practical tools that can be used in the educational process.
