The final, sixth, volume of a A Political History of Ukraine. The 20th Century elucidates the process of the disintegration of the Soviet system beginning from 1945 as well as the first decade of the independence of Ukraine. The volume shows the inevitability of the historically conditioned process of the disintegration of the Soviet Union and of the collapse of all its consolidating elements, including communist ideology, one – party system, “a single economic complex”, and “proletarian internationalism”. The book reconstructs the picture of the victory of the national movement and of overcoming the sharp problems of state building.
The book is based on a range of historical sources – archive documents, economic statistics, sociological data, press publications, and moroirs.
