The essence of the mental dimension in Ukrainian regional civilisation and its phenomenon, the historical sources and the main stages in the development from the ancient times to the present are covered. The theoretical and methodological, historiosophical and historiographical foundation of civilizational comprehension of the Ukrainian people’s mentality is stated. The evolution of the mental image of Ukrainians under the influence of written language origin, the advent of Christianity, the formation of the Cossacks, the development of book printing, university education, science, interconfessional dialogue, the understanding of the spiritual values of the Renaissance and Enlightenment, the historiosophy of Gregory Skovoroda, Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, Mykhailo Hrushevsky etc.

The considerable attention is paid to the analysis of regional, cultural, spiritual, psychic and behavioural features of the mentality of Ukrainians in the mainland and in the diaspora. The disastrous consequences for the Ukrainian mentality caused by the repressive policies of the imperial and communist regimes, the Holodomor and militant godlessness are studied, the forms of self-defence of the mentality of Ukrainians, their resistance to assimilation processes are shown.
