Leading Researcher at the Department of Political Culture and Ideology.

Born on Sept. 27, 1953 in Lutsk. Graduated from the Lviv Polytechnic Institute (1977) and Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow (1988, honor diploma). Served as an editor and the deputy editor-in-chief of Vsesvit (The World) magazine (1984-1996), executive editor of the Krytyka monthly (1997–2000), and a research fellow at the Ukrainian Center for Cultural Studies (2001–2011).

He penned three monographs and dozens of scholarly articles in Ukrainian and English, as well as several popular books and collections of essays, translated eventually into Polish, French, German, Serbian, and Hungarian.

He won a number of fellowships, including Fulbright (1994–1996, 2016), Kennan (1999), Reuters (2000), Milena Jesensky (2001), CEU (2002, 2005), Reagan-Fascell (2011), EURIAS (2013–2014), URI Fellowship at Harvard (2019) and RFIEA Fellowship in Paris (2021).

Mykola Riabchuk is a member of the editorial board of “Krytyka”, “New Eastern Europe”, “Political Studies” and “Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society”, the honorary president of PEN Ukraine and the jury member of the Angelus international award (Wroclaw).

He was distinguished with the Antonovych Prize (2003) for the outstanding achievements in humanities; POLCUL award (1998) and “Bene merito” medal of the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs for the significant contribution in Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation; a commemorative medal “200 years of the Warsaw University” (2017) for the achievements in teaching and research, and a medal “For Professional Achievements” (2018) at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 2022, his collection of essays “The Nationalist’s Lexicon” was distinguished with the Taras Shevchenko National Prize in Arts and Literature.

Mykola Riabchuk was a Petro Jacyk visiting professor at Columbia Unversity in 2006 and a Ramsay Tompkins visiting professor at the University of Alberta in 2007/2008, a visiting lecturer at Penn State (1994-1995) and Princeton (2022), and a recurrent visiting lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, University of Warsaw and University of Regensburg.

Hs primary fields of interest are: postcommunist transformations, postcolonialism, national identity, cultural and language politics, Ukrainian-Polish and Ukrainian-Russian relations.
