Chief Scientific Research Scholar,  Department of Theory and History of Political Science, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor.

Born July 30, 1953.  Graduated from the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko State University in 1975, and completed his Post-Graduate studies there in l978.  Obtained the Candidate of Historical Sciences degree in 1978 and the Doctorate of Historical Sciences in 1994. The academic rank of Professor of the Department of History and Culture of Ukraine was awarded to him in 2000.

Since 1991 – active at the Institute of National Relations and Political Science of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (now the Kuras Institute for Political and Ethnic Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) as Scholarly Secretary, Head of the Center for Historical Political Science, and Head of the Ethnopolitical Department. From 1997- 2000, chaired the department of the M.S. Hrushevsky Institute of Ukrainian Archaeography and Source Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. During 2012-2015, directed the State Scientific Institution “Encyclopedic Publishing House”.

Since 2015 – Chief Scientific Research Scholar of the Department of Theory and History of Political Science of the Kuras Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies of NAS of Ukraine.

Member of the Academic Council of the Kuras Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies of NAS of Ukraine.

Member of the editorial boards of the “Ukrainian Historical Journal,” the scientific journal “Political Research,”  the journal Krytyka,” the “Kyiv-Mohyla Humanities Journal,” the “Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts Herald,” the scientific journal “From the Archives of VUCHK-GPU-NKVD-KGB,” and the scientific herald “Gilea.”

Between 1990-2000 — active as invited Visiting  Research Scholar at various scholarly institutions of Canada, Germany, Poland, the USA and France.

Member of the Ukrainian Historical Society of the USA (1994), Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Political Sciences (2007), Academician of the Academy of Higher Education of Ukraine (2014).

Member of the joint Ukrainian-Polish working group for the preparation of a multi-volume publication “Poland and Ukraine in the 30-40s of the twentieth century. Unknown documents from the archives of special services “(since 1996). Member of the Board of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory (since 2015). Member of the German-Ukrainian Commission of Historians (since 2015). Chairman of the Ukrainian part of the Ukrainian-Polish Forum of Historians (since 2015). From 2003-2012, Chairman of the Jury of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in History.

Honored Promoter of  Science and Technology in Ukraine (2003). Laureate of the Mykola Kostomarov Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1996), Laureate of the Security Service of Ukraine Prize (1996, 1997), Laureate of the Omelyan and Tetyana Antonovych Foundation (USA) Prize for Scientific Works on the History of Ukraine (2002), Laureate of the All-Ukrainian Annual Mass Media Competition information “Golden Pen” – the highest award in the field of journalism (2002), winner of the prize of the magazine “Modernity” and the League of Ukrainian Patrons (2004), winner of the Ivan Franko Prize in the field of information (2008).

Has prepared 8 candidates of sciences and 7 doctors of sciences.

Author of more than 800 publications. Widely published in Austria, Argentina, Great Britain, Italy, Canada, Latvia, Germany, Poland, Russia, USA, France, and the Czech Republic.

Research interests: Political history and the history of political thought in Ukraine in the XIX-XXI centuries; the politics of memory and the process of decommunization in modern Ukraine; the history of the Communist Totalitarian system in Ukraine; the Holodomor in Ukraine; historical biography; mechanism and methods of the activity of the Communist Special Services in Ukraine; biographies of Chekists; Polish-Ukrainian relations in 1930–1940 of the 20th century; the Communist repressive and punitive system and the Ukrainian nationalist movement; analysis of school history textbooks.
