Volume Five in the series A Political History of Ukraine: The Twentieth Century, makes extensive use of documentary, primarily archival, sources to investigate the political processes in the Ukrainian emigrant community in Europe and in the Ukrainian land controlled by Poland, Romania and Czechoslovakia in the period between the two world wars.

The focal point of the book is a comparative analysis of political tendencies in the interwar Ukrainian emigration and their ideological principles and models of state building. The authors thoroughly explore questions pertaining to the description of the international legal status of the Western Ukrainian lands, the development of the social and political-party structure in Galicia, Volyn, Bukovyna and Transcarpathia, and the specific character, forms and mechanisms of the manifestation of Ukraine political interests in each of these historical parts of Ukraine which then belonged to other states. The authors have convincingly evidenced that the political history of the Ukrainians outside the Ukrainian SSR during the interwar period is inseparable from the history of Ukraine as a political entity.
