The book analyzes the problems of correlation between individual and collective rights, rights of nation and human rights. The monograph represents the results of a broad research of ethnic tensions and conflicts in contemporary Ukraine. This is a collection of historical-scholarly articles by the Ukrainian historian Yuri Shapoval, which were written in the last ten years. The final, sixth, volume of a A Political History of Ukraine. The 20th Century elucidates the process of the disintegration of the Soviet system beginning from 1945 as well as the first decade of the independence of Ukraine. The volume shows the inevitability of the historically conditioned process of the disintegration of the Soviet Union and of the collapse of all its consolidating elements, including communist ideology, one – party system, “a single economic complex”, and “proletarian internationalism”. The book reconstructs the picture of the victory of the national movement and of overcoming the sharp problems of state building.
Volume Five in the series A Political History of Ukraine: The Twentieth Century, makes extensive use of documentary, primarily archival, sources to investigate the political processes in the Ukrainian emigrant community in Europe and in the Ukrainian land controlled by Poland, Romania and Czechoslovakia in the period between the two world wars.
Volume 4 covers the period of the Second World War. The authors used unique archive materials and works on modern historiography to reinterpret the question of the role and place of Ukraine in the context of the prewar partnership of the two dictatorship followed by their military confrontation.

Volume Two in the series A Political history of Ukraine: 20the Century is focused on the events of the revolutionary period of 1917 – 1920. Utilizing extensive documentary materials, the authors reconstruct the complex and contradictory processes of carrying out social and national – liberation revolutions, which lay at the heart of the life and development of the Ukrainian nation. Their work also reveals the search for theoretical legal system models of national – state organization and the results of attempts to implement them in social practice.
